Asteroid Dust Could Fight Climate Change on Earth

To combat global warming, scientists in Scotland now suggest an out-of-this-world solution ? a giant dust cloud in space, blasted off an asteroid, which would act like a sunshade for Earth.

The world is warming and the climate is changing. Although many want to prevent these shifts by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat from the sun, some controversially suggest deliberating manipulating the planet's climate with large-scale engineering projects, commonly called geoengineering.

Instead of altering the climate by targeting either the oceans or the atmosphere, some researchers have suggested geoengineering projects that would affect the entire planet from space. For instance, projects that reduced the amount of solar radiation Earth receives by 1.7 percent could offset the effects of a global increase in temperature of 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C). The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has noted climate models suggest average global temperatures will likely rise by 2 to 11.5 degrees F (1.1 to 6.4 degrees C) by the end of this century.

"A 1.7 percent reduction is very small and will hardly be noticeable on Earth," said researcher Russell Bewick, a space scientist at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. "People sometimes get the idea of giant screens blocking the entire sun. This is not the case ... as [the device] is constantly between the sun and the Earth, it acts merely as a very light shade or filter."

Shading Earth

One proposal to shade the Earth from the sun would place giant mirrors in space. The main problem with this concept is the immense cost and effort needed either to build and launch such reflectors or to construct them in outer space ? the current cost to launch an object into low Earth orbit runs into thousands of dollars per pound. Another would use blankets of dust to blot out the sun, just as clouds do for Earth. These offer the virtue of simplicity compared with mirrors, but run the risk of getting dispersed over time by solar radiation and the gravitational pull of the sun, moon and planets. [Top 10 Craziest Environmental Ideas]

Now instead of having a dust cloud floating by itself in space, researchers suggest an asteroid could essentially gravitationally anchor a dust cloud in space to block sunlight and cool the Earth.

"I would like to make it clear that I would never suggest geoengineering in place of reducing our carbon emissions," Bewick told LiveScience. Instead, he said, "We can buy time to find a lasting solution to combat Earth?s climate change. The dust cloud is not a permanent cure, but it could offset the effects of climate change for a given time to allow slow-acting measures like carbon capture to take effect."

The idea would be to place an asteroid at Lagrange point L1, a site where the gravitational pull of the sun and the Earth cancel out. This point is about four times the distance from the Earth to the moon.

The researchers suggest outfitting a near-Earth asteroid with a "mass driver," a device consisting of electromagnets that would hurl asteroid-derived matter away from the giant rock. The mass driver could serve both as a rocket to push the asteroid to the L1 point and as an engine to spew out sun-shielding dust. [5 Reasons to Care About Asteroids]

The researchers calculate that the largest near-Earth asteroid, 1036 Ganymed, could maintain a dust cloud large enough to block out 6.58 percent of the solar radiation that would normally reach Earth, more than enough to combat any current global warming trends. Such a cloud would be about 11 million-billion pounds (5 million-billion kilograms) in mass and about 1,600 miles (2,600 kilometers) wide.

Ganymed has a mass of about 286 million-billion lbs. (130 million-billion kg). An asteroid of this size might make one think of disaster movies, such as "Armageddon"; however, "rather than destroying the Earth, it could be used to help mankind," Bewick said.

Asteroid dust challenges

The main challenge of this proposal would be pushing an asteroid the size of Ganymed to the sun-Earth L1 point.

"The company Planetary Resources recently announced their intention to mine asteroids," Bewick said. "The study that they base their plans on reckons that it will be possible to capture an asteroid with a mass of 500,000 kilograms (1.1 million lbs.) by 2025. Comparing this to the mass of Ganymed makes the task of capturing it seem unfeasible, at least in everything except the very far term. However, smaller asteroids could be moved and clustered at the first Lagrange point."

Safety is another concern.

"A very large asteroid is a potential threat to Earth, and therefore great care and testing would be required in the implementation of this scenario," Bewick said. "Due to this, the political challenges would probably match the scale of the engineering challenge. Even for the capture of much smaller asteroids, there will likely be reservations from all areas of society, though the risks would be much less."

Also, there's no way to fully test this dust cloud on a large scale to verify its effectiveness before implementing it, "something that is common to all geoengineering schemes," Bewick said. "On the global scale, it is not possible to test because the test would essentially be the real thing, except probably in a diluted form. Climate modeling can be performed, but without some large-scale testing, the results from these models cannot be fully verified."

Still, if geoengineers did use asteroids to generate clouds, they could drastically reduce how much dust the projects spew out "should any catastrophic climate response be observed," Bewick said, "with the cloud dispersing naturally over time."

The scientists will detail their findings in the Nov. 12 issue of the journal Advances in Space Research.

(AP) ? Freedom was at the heart of Belgian designer Raf Simons' debut ready-to-wear outing for Christian Dior ? a confident show that twinned the essence of the 1950's "New Look," with the liberated hemlines of the 1960s.

Simons, a minimalist, is in many ways the stark opposite of Christian Dior, the exuberant house founder who favored longer ankle-length silhouettes.

But Friday's free, liberating display shows that in spirit ? if not perhaps in silhouette ? they meet eye to eye.

Simons took the "New Look" bar jacket, in black, gray and white and sent it down the catwalk often bare-legged, with the hemlines of the sexual revolution.

It was the same rebellious mood with which Christian Dior founded the house in 1947: His long-length "New Look" shocked the fashion world in its indulgent use of material ? a backlash against wartime fabric rationing.

"The foundation of the house is a reaction to restrictions," said Simons. "I wanted to do that too."

Do it, he did ? not forgetting to have fun on the way.

The strongest of the 53 looks were the highly wearable plays on the "bar."

Cheekily, Simons turned it and other jackets into mini dresses ? twinned with black uber-short shorts.

Straight H-lines and ball gowns were truncated, as were flared A-lines, often curved with deceptively complex mixes of pleats and godets a dash of Simons' own signature architecture.

Simons' has been swatting up.

Where Christian Dior loved garden flowers ? here, Raf Simons delved even further into the bushes, bringing back in his jam-jar six sumptuous insect-inspired looks in silk and tulle.

One pink and blue loose A-line used tulle and embroidery to create the translucent veins of an insect wing.

Another beautiful, subtle touch was an orange embroidered organza dress with the delicate patterning of a butterfly wing.

It was details like this that made this collection fly so freely and so high.

Gay couples may get reprieve in deportation cases

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Department of Homeland Security is planning to issue a policy memo stating that illegal immigrants with American same-sex partners are eligible to have their deportations put on hold under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority cases.

The move had been sought by gay rights activists and their allies in Congress before Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced plans for the policy Thursday in a letter to 84 Democratic lawmakers.

"It will mark the very first time that lesbian and gay couples have been recognized within immigration policy for relief," said Steve Ralls, the spokesman for Immigration Equality, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender immigrants.

The Democratic lawmakers addressed in Napolitano's letter pressed the agency to inform Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices that bi-national gay couples in long-term relationships have family ties that should be considered as grounds for deferring a foreign citizen's removal from the U.S.

"I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase 'family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners," Napolitano wrote, adding that the decision to grant reprieves still would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The instructions do not mean that foreigners who are married to Americans of the same sex will be eligible for green cards or citizenship, as are immigrants with opposite sex spouses. The Obama administration is continuing to enforce a 1996 law that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even as it opposes it in court and takes gay relationships into account when evaluating deportation cases.

The Williams Institute, a think tank, estimates that as of 2010 there were about 29,000 same-sex couples nationwide comprised of a U.S citizen and a citizen of another country.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies, said that even though the administration says it is complying with the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act by not allowing citizens to sponsor same-sex spouses for green cards, the pending guidance for ICE officials to review the family ties of same-sex couples suggests otherwise.

"It's a camel's nose under the tent," Krikorian said. "If you get same-sex couples approved in terms of immigration, you can use that as an incremental approach to getting changes in other areas, such as in tax policy."

The policy guidance expected to go out next week will reference a memo ICE Director John Morton issued last year advising the agency's officers and lawyers to review pending deportation cases to determine which ones should be top priority and which ones might be shelved, Napolitano said.

Government attorneys weigh factors such as a person's criminal record, family ties and community relations in making their decisions.

ICE officials said at the time that long-term same-sex relationships could be included under the family ties criteria, but advocates and House Democrats led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted that determination put into writing.

French centenarian cyclist aims for 100 km record

LYON, France (Reuters) - A French centenarian will try to ride his way into the record books on Friday by becoming the fastest cyclist of his age to cover 100 km (62 miles).

Robert Marchand, a former fireman and boxing enthusiast from Paris, has been training every day for months in hopes of crossing the finish line in less than five hours.

At nearly 101 years old, Marchand claims to have covered hundreds of thousands of kilometres on his bicycle during his lifetime and said he plans to cover the distance at a speed of 22.5 km/h.

"If I make it, I'll become the best in the world," said Marchand, who turns 101 in November. "I know that all over the world, in China, in the United States, in Russia, they're already looking for someone to beat my record."

Marchand lives alone, drives a car, makes his own meals and cleans his apartment with no help. The wiry centenarian says he never smoked, but otherwise indulged a healthy appetite for wine and women throughout his life.

His uncommon vitality has piqued the interest of scientists at the Inserm public research institute, who examine Marchand every three months to try to understand the secret to his longevity and well-being.

"They told me I had the constitution of a 55-year-old man, they think it's genetic," he said, laughing. "I have never deprived myself of anything: not wine, not food, not women, but always with moderation."

Asked if he planned to get any performance-enhancing help for his race, Marchand said: "The only doping for me is water with a spoonful of honey that I put in my canteen - and that's it."

"If I was doping, though, maybe I could hit 35 km/h."

Savage won a legal battle Thursday Sept. 27, 2012 and announced he was leaving Talk Radio Network, which broadcast his show that attracted more than 8 million listeners a week. (AP Photo/John Storey)

(AP) ? Michael Savage's talk show left the airwaves Thursday after the conservative host won a legal battle with his longtime employer, although his attorney said discussions with new networks are already under way.

Savage posted a message on his website Thursday evening under the headline "Free at Last!" that said he was free to work with any station or network from now on. He said he "will not be heard on the radio for some time."

His attorney Daniel Horowitz said Savage left Talk Radio Network after obtaining a favorable ruling in arbitration Thursday afternoon.

More than 8 million people listen to Savage's show each week, placing him behind only Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity in ratings, according to the magazine Talkers. The immediate effect that his abrupt departure would have on companies that advertise on his show was unclear.

An email sent to Oregon-based Talk Radio Network was not immediately returned. Savage's bio and name already have been removed from the company's website.

Horowitz says Savage has been fighting the network for two years to get out a contract that was 10 years old and prevented the host from switching employers. Horowitz said the agreement lacked protections afforded to artists and entertainers under California law, and tied Savage to Talk Radio Network indefinitely.

Horowitz said Savage spent more than $900,000 fighting his case but was awarded more than $1 million in arbitration. The agreement also calls for Savage to be able to obtain all archived tapes of his show.

Savage, who broadcasts from San Francisco, was heard on nearly 400 stations and has gained notoriety for offending immigrants and minorities, calling the Muslim holy book, the Quran, a "book of hate" and being banned in 2009 from traveling to England for allegedly fostering extremism or hatred. After that decision, the host appealed to one of the targets of his barbs, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for help.

A State Department spokesman said at the time that countries have a right to determine who is allowed to enter, but declined to comment further on Savage's request.

Non-partisan group posts tweet against Scott Brown

District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics Twitter account

The Twitter account for the nonpartisan District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics posted a link to an editorial criticizing Massachusetts Republican Sen. Scott Brown on Thursday, an act the government agency tells Yahoo News was an accident.

The link directed followers to a piece on the left-leaning Talking Points Memo website headlined "Really, Scott Brown?" that attacks him for bringing up a controversy surrounding the Native American heritage of his challenger, Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren, at a recent debate.

"We would not have put that up there," Board of Elections spokeswoman Karen Raper said when informed of the Twitter post. "I don't know how it got there."

The post was deleted a few minutes after Yahoo News called to inquire about the tweet.

"Somebody must have hacked into our account and posted that," Raper added. "Anybody who had worked here previously who had access to the Twitter account could have posted it or either someone posted it by accident."

The agency has since changed the account's password.

The remark about Brown also appeared for several hours on an automatic feed on the agency's website.

Means Test Fail - Credit Slips

As has been widely reported, the football coach of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, John L. Smith, has filed chapter 7 bankruptcy. ESPN summarized his financial circumstances:

Arkansas coach John L. Smith is trying to wipe away $25.7 million in debt in bankruptcy court and hang onto $1.2 million in retirement accounts and some personal property . . . .

Smith was coaching Louisville when he began investing in real estate, which he has said, was profitable until land values took a nosedive. Smith filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Sept. 6, and court papers filed Wednesday detail the depth of his financial losses.

As of the filing, Smith had received $115,000 from his 10-month, $850,000 contract with Arkansas, plus $35,643 from his alma mater, Weber State, which he left before coaching a game to return to Fayetteville after Bobby Petrino's firing. He also picked up $9,810 from Nike and $1,057 from a football camp, according to the court documents.

Smith has two retirement accounts, each worth about $600,000, which his filing lists as exempt from liquidation, along with household furnishings.

If you want to see for yourself, Smith's bankruptcy schedules are availabe at Scribd.

In 2011, the median chapter 7 debtor had $32,556 in annual income. WIth an $850,000 salary, Smith is certainly not the typical chapter 7 filer, and the Bankruptcy Code will protect his future salary. Moreover, Smith's principal assets--his retirement accounts--are exempt from the bankruptcy process. Thus, barring any hiccups, Smith should be able to walk way from $25.7 in million debts with a substantial salary and retirement savings.

Granted, Smith's salary would cover only a small percentage of his $25.7 million in debts, but it is still a nontrivial sum in absolute terms. Smith would seem to have the capacity to make some partial repayment to creditors. Congress should do something to deal with "can pay" debtors using the bankruptcy system to walk away from obligations where they can make some repayment.

Oh, that's right, Congress did make these changes in 2005, adopting a "means test" that was supposed to direct people into a chapter 13 repayment plan when they had the capacity to repay. The means test, however, does not apply to Smith because his debts are related to a business and not "primarily consumer debts." Even the general standard of dismissal of a chapter 7 for "abuse" does not apply.

On the other hand, a single Arkansan like Smith with consumer debts and with an income over $35,283 potentially gets caught in the means test web. Congress was quick to go after $35,000/year debtors but did almost nothing to deal with cases like Smith's. The financial industry was lobbying against their credit card customers not persons who can afford to participate in high stakes real-estate partnerships. Congress listened to the lobbyists. The game does seem to be rigged against the middle class (to quote Elizabeth Warren . . . whatever happened to her after she left the blog?).

No blame attaches to Coach Smith. He is only doing what the law permits him to do. Smith's case is a reminder that, although almost seven years have passed since the 2005 bankruptcy law went into effect, it still needs fixing.

And, it is possible that there may still be a move to dismiss Smith's chapter 7 case given his apparent ability to repay at least some of his debt. Courts have sometimes read a "good-faith" filing requirement into chapter 7, which makes sense as a policy matter but is hard to justify as a matter of sound statutory interpretation when Congress has so clearly spoken on the issue of who belongs in chapter 7. There is the related question of how it is "bad faith" to do something permitted by statute. Yeah, the courts can "fix" the problem, but if the courts shoud just fix the statute's problems, why do we have a statute? In class, I refer to this idea as the "Bill & Ted" problem. If we can trust the courts to do what is right, why don't we just have one statute that reads "Be excellent to each other." Once you commit to the idea that the legislature writes the rules, the courts have constraints.

Hat tip to my former student Dimitris for both directing me to the story and for the subject line.

Church of England group meets to select archbishop

LONDON (AP) ? Senior members of a Church of England commission are starting a three-day meeting Wednesday to select a new archbishop of Canterbury ? the spiritual leader of the 78-million-strong Anglican communion.

The Crown Nominations Commission will deliberate in secret to choose a successor to Rowan Williams. He is leaving his post at the end of December to take on a new job as the Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Much of Williams' tenure was devoted to trying to keep the diverse churches within the Anglican Communion together despite disputes over issues related to gender and homosexuality. Conservative and growing African churches are at odds with liberal churches in the United States and Canada on a variety of matters.

The commission will submit the name of a preferred candidate, together with an alternate, to Prime Minister David Cameron. The prime minister will offer the commission's choice to Queen Elizabeth II for approval.

The archbishop of York, John Sentamu, and the bishop of Liverpool, the Rt. Rev. James Jones, the bishop of London, the Rt Rev. Richard Chartres, and the bishop of Norwich, the Rt. Rev. Graham James are among the favorites to replace Williams.

It landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California and will soon retire at a museum in Los Angeles.

The specially modified?Boeing 747?with the newly retired spaceship perched on its back touched down safely at 12:50 p.m. local time (3:50 p.m. EDT) at Edwards, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert.

NASA retired its shuttle fleet last year after completing the U.S. portion of the $100 billion International Space Station, a permanently staffed research complex that is owned by 15 nations and orbits about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth.

Endeavour embarked on its last cross-county "ferry" journey on Wednesday from?Cape Canaveral,?Florida, and made several low-altitude passes over NASA centers in?Mississippi,?Louisiana?and?Texas?before stopping for the night at Ellington Field near the?Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The trip resumed early on Thursday, with Endeavour?and its carrier jet making additional flyovers - one over?Tucson,?Arizona, in a salute to former Congresswoman?Gabrielle Giffords?and her husband,?Mark Kelly, the retired astronaut who commanded Endeavour's final flight on his last mission in late May 2011.

Giffords, still recuperating from a gunshot wound to the head suffered in an attempt on her life last year, watched the flyover from the roof of a?Tucson?parking garage with her husband and mother, according to former aide?C.J. Karamargin, who joined them.

"When it came into view, Mark said, 'There's my plane!'" Karamargin recounted. "Gabby was just elated, hooting and hollering like the rest of us were."

From?Arizona,?Endeavour and its carrier jet flew on to?California, where the spacecraft was built two decades ago, for the landing at?Edwards Air Force Base.

The sprawling installation used to serve as the primary landing site for NASA's shuttle program before the space agency built a landing facility for the orbiters at the Kennedy Space Center in?Florida. Edwards then became the principal backup landing spot for shuttles in case of bad weather at Cape Canaveral.

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City cracked down on the sale of supersized sodas and other sugary drinks Thursday in what was celebrated by some as a groundbreaking attempt to curb obesity but condemned by others as a blatant intrusion into people's lives by a busybody mayor.

Public health experts around the nation ? and the restaurant and soft-drink industry ? will be watching closely to see how it goes over among New Yorkers, a famously disputatious bunch. Barring any court action, the measure will take effect in March.

The regulations, approved easily by the city Board of Health, apply to any establishment with a food-service license, including fast-food places, delis, movie and Broadway theaters, the concession stands at Yankee Stadium and the pizzerias of Little Italy. They will be barred from serving sugary beverages in cups or bottles larger than 16 ounces.

No other U.S. city has gone so far as to restrict portion sizes at restaurants to fight weight gain.

"We cannot continue to have our kids come down with diabetes at age 6," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The mayor rejected suggestions that the rule constitutes an assault on personal liberty. "Nobody is banning anything," he said, noting that restaurant customers can still buy as much soda as they want, as long as they are willing to carry it in multiple containers.

He said the inconvenience is well worth the potential public health benefit, and likened the city's actions to measures taken decades ago to phase out lead in household paint.

Others, though, likened the ban to Prohibition. A New York Times poll last month showed that six in 10 New Yorkers opposed the restrictions.

"It's a slippery slope. When does it stop? What comes next?" said Sebastian Lopez, a college student from Queens. He added: "This is my life. I should be able to do what I want."

The restrictions do not apply to supermarkets or most convenience stores, because such establishments are not subject to Board of Health regulation. And there are exceptions for beverages made mostly of milk or unsweetened fruit juice.

(Because convenience stores are exempt, the rules don't even apply to 7-Eleven's Big Gulp, even though the belly-busting serving of soda has become Exhibit A in the debate over Americans' eating habits.)

Some health experts said it isn't clear whether the ban will have any effect on obesity. But they said it might help usher in a change in attitude toward overeating, in the same way that many Americans have come to regard smoking as inconsiderate.

The regulations follow other ambitious health moves on Bloomberg's watch, many of which were attacked as a push toward a "nanny state."

Yet some have proved to be national trendsetters, such as making chain restaurants post calories on their menus. The city has also barred artificial trans fats in french fries and other restaurant food, cracked down on smoking and promoted breast-feeding over formula.

The Board of Health approved the big-soda ban 8-0, with one member, Dr. Sixto R. Caro, abstaining. Caro, a doctor of internal medicine, said the plan wasn't comprehensive enough.

Others spoke forcefully of the need for action to deal with an obesity crisis.

"I feel to not act would really be criminal," said board member Susan Klitzman, director of the Urban Public Health Program at Hunter College. City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley called the rule "a historic step to address a major health problem of our time."

The restaurant and beverage industries complained that the city is exaggerating the role sugary beverages have played in making Americans fat.

"This is a political solution and not a health solution," said Eliot Hoff, a spokesman for an industry-sponsored group called New Yorkers for Beverage Choices, which claims to have gathered more than 250,000 signatures on petitions against the plan.

He said the group is considering suing to block the rule.

"We will continue to voice our opposition to this ban and fight for the right of New Yorkers to make their own choices. And we will stand with the business owners who will be hurt by these arbitrary limitations," Hoff said in a statement.

Enforcement will be carried out by New York City's restaurant inspectors. Violations will carry a $200 fine.

Complying might prove complicated for some establishments.

Starbucks is trying to figure out whether the regulations bar it from selling its calorie-packed Frappuccinos in the 24-ounce size.

Another issue could be iced coffee, which many cafes sweeten with liquefied sugar. Customers might have to add the sweetener themselves.

Fast-food restaurants with self-serve soda fountains will be prohibited from giving out cups larger than 16 ounces, but people will still be allowed refills.

Manhattan pizza shop owner Vinnie Siena said halting sales of large sodas will hurt his already thin profit margin, unless he raises prices.

"I'm having a tough time as it is. They don't want the little guy to survive, it seems," he said.

(AP) ? Most stars shun the "O word" ? Oscar ? when they might be in the running for an Academy Award, not wanting to jinx their chances or look too eager.

Bill Murray has no problem dissecting Hollywood's highest honors.

A best actor nominee for 2003's "Lost in Translation," Murray could have Oscar prospects again as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in "Hyde Park on the Hudson," a comic drama that played the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.

Murray won a string of key prizes for "Lost in Translation" leading up to the Oscars, including a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award and honors from many critics groups.

When he lost on Oscar night, it was a lesson not to get your hopes up too high, Murray said in an interview.

"You can't get all ramped up and amped up about this thing all the time," Murray said. "I mean, I got excited about it once, and it was odd. I won all the prizes, I won literally all the prizes all the way up to the last one. And I really thought, well, 'I've just to go get this thing, I'll be right back.'

"And then I didn't win, and I thought, 'Well, that's odd. How odd is that? I'm feeling so odd now.' And I came all dressed up and didn't win. So I'm not going to get all crazy about that."

Murray is a rare comic actor who has evolved into a performer with the depth to create characters that put him into the awards mix with such films as "Rushmore," ''Get Low" and "Broken Flowers."

The former "Saturday Night Live" regular and crazy man of "Ghostbusters," ''Caddyshack" and "Stripes" first dabbled in heavy drama with a 1984 adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's "The Razor's Edge." Audiences and critics were not kind.

The reaction toughened him up for the inevitable double-takes as people mull the notion: Bill Murray as Franklin Roosevelt?

After "The Razor's Edge," ''I remember a certain famous movie reviewer saying, 'Bill Murray should not be allowed to do anything but comedy,' which I reminded him of at the Cannes Film Festival when I was nominated for an Oscar," Murray said. "Sometimes when you've got a biopic and they go, 'Jerry Lewis will play Albert Einstein' or something, the first thing is, 'No, don't buy it. Not for a second.'"

Murray knows people may have trouble buying him as Roosevelt. But he approached the character with the same thoughts he had when he played writer Hunter S. Thompson in 1980's "Where the Buffalo Roam."

The actor already was friends with Thompson, and when it came time to capture the writer on film, Murray aimed to bring out the writer's brightest qualities.

"I had the feeling of, like, 'I've got to revere the best of this person,'" Murray said. "The same with Roosevelt. I had to revere the best of him."

Murray is a very credible Roosevelt, capturing the grace, humor, subtle tact and homey wisdom of the president as he plays host to the king and queen of Britain, who have come over to seek American support as World War II approaches.

Directed by Roger Michell ("Notting Hill"), "Hyde Park on the Hudson" is told largely through the eyes of Roosevelt's spinster cousin (Laura Linney), a confidant of the president. The film opens in U.S. theaters in December.

Murray's sister had polio, the disease that crippled Roosevelt, so the actor said he had a strong sense of how to play the president's body language as he struggles on crutches, is pushed about in a wheelchair or is curled like a child in the arms of aides who lift him in and out of cars.

Capturing Roosevelt's voice was the bigger challenge. Murray worked with a voice coach to break down the unusual mix of vowel sounds in Roosevelt's speech.

"It's upstate New York, it's a little bit of Dutch in it, because he's Dutch. It almost sounds Scandinavian. They've got kind of an 'oot' and 'aboot' thing, like Minnesota, Wisconsin, in there sometime," Murray said. "It's just an inconsistent voice. It jumps around a little bit, so you had to be kind of flexible with it. I just tried to get as much of it in me as I could."

The intimate film shows Roosevelt in private life, so Murray wasn't called on for any grand oratory.

Though he was ready for some public speaking of his own at the Oscars for "Lost in Translation," Murray has a practical attitude about the value of his awards prospects this time: If he's got Oscar buzz, it will draw audience attention to the film.

"It was OK that I didn't win, and I don't have any hard feelings about it. It was like, 'OK, that was cool, I'm fine. I'm fine with the way my career's gone. I'm happy with it. It's gone great.'

"The great thing about the Oscars that's cool is it means people are going to see your movie. That's really the deal."

Oogieloves Creator Fires Back at Oogie-Haters

Oogieloves Review NYT

Screenwriter Scott Stabile has read the pans and box office bomb reports and anti-Oogieloves screeds, and yet! He's got nothing but (Oogie)love for even his harshest critics: "As all of us adults know, we live in a tense and troubled world. Young kids will be exposed to plenty of real-life scares and violence on TV, in video games, on the computer and in daily life. Why do we have to expose preschoolers to anything but innocence and love in a 90-minute movie? Why isn?t it enough to show a gentle world where people are kind and help one another, in hopes that young kids mimic those sentiments over fighting and jealousy and revenge?" Hobby Lobby sues over morning-after pill coverage

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Christian-oriented Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday challenging a mandate in the nation's health care overhaul law that requires employers to provide coverage for the morning-after pill and similar drugs.

The lawsuit by the Oklahoma City-based chain claims the government mandate is forcing the company's owners "to violate their deeply held religious beliefs under threat of heavy fines, penalties and lawsuits." Failure to provide the drugs in the company's health insurance plan could lead to fines of up to $1.3 million a day, the company said.

"By being required to make a choice between sacrificing our faith or paying millions of dollars in fines, we essentially must choose which poison pill to swallow," David Green, Hobby Lobby CEO and founder, said in a statement. "We simply cannot abandon our religious beliefs to comply with this mandate."

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City, alleges the Health and Human Services mandate is unconstitutional and requests an injunction to prohibit it from being enforced. Hobby Lobby is self-insured and will be required to comply with the mandate by Jan. 1, the start of its health insurance plan year.

"We are confident that the court will act quickly," said Kyle Duncan, general counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in Washington, which represents Hobby Lobby. Duncan said 27 other lawsuits have been filed nationwide over the mandate, mostly by nonprofit groups.

"This mandate violates the religious liberty of millions of Americans," Duncan said. "The government has turned a deaf ear to the rights of business owners."

Duncan said the lawsuit does not challenge rules regarding a variety other birth-control measures.

Hobby Lobby calls itself a "biblically founded business" that is closed on Sundays. Founded in 1972, the company now operates more than 500 stores in 41 states and employs more than 13,000 full-time employees who are eligible for health insurance coverage.

The lawsuit also was filed on behalf of another of the Green family's businesses, Mardel, Inc., a bookstore and education company also based in Oklahoma City that sells a variety of Christian-themed materials. The company operates 35 stores in seven states and has 372 full-time employees.

Hobby Lobby is the largest and only non-Catholic-owned business to file a lawsuit against the Health and Human Services mandate that forces all companies, regardless of religious conviction, to provide coverage of drugs the lawsuit alleges are abortion-inducing, including the morning-after pill and week-after pill.

"The Green family's religious beliefs forbid them from participating in, providing access to, paying for, training others to engage in, or otherwise supporting abortion-causing drugs and devices," the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit says the family also has "a sincere religious objection" to providing coverage for certain kinds of intrauterine devices and alleges they can cause the death of an embryo by preventing it from implanting in the wall of a woman's uterus.

The morning-after pill works by preventing ovulation or fertilization. In medical terms, pregnancy begins when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus. If taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, it can reduce a woman's chances of pregnancy by as much as 89 percent.

But critics of the contraceptive say it is the equivalent of an abortion pill because it can prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

In his statement, Green said the federal government is challenging his faith by forcing his company to offer the morning-after and week-after pills in its insurance plan.

"These abortion-causing drugs go against our faith, and our family is now being forced to choose between following the laws of the land that we love or maintaining the religious beliefs that have made our business successful and have supported our family and thousands of our employees and their families," Green said.
